Flowy Summer Dresses

It’s time to go flowy! Summer heralds the onset of gorgeous and comfortable dresses.

The summer is upon us, and there’s no time like the present to bring out all the floaty fabrics and dresses you’ve got in your closet. Or if you want to shop for new clothes for the summer, remember one thumb rule: nothing spells summer like flowy dresses!

The right fabric. Chiffon, georgettes and light cotton are best for flowy dresses. The lighter the material, the flowier the dress will be.

White is best. White, flowy summer dresses are a must-have in every woman’s wardrobe. They are light on the skin, they suit any colour and style of jacket, jewellery, scarf or shoes, and they complement every skin tone. Pick a flowy dress in white cotton, but be sure to also invest in flesh-coloured cotton slips and underwear. Do not wear dark underwear under a white dress, because it will always show.

How does it fit? Always try on the dress before you purchase it. Some dresses look light and summery, but may make you look clunky after you wear them. The dress should not you’re your midriff uncomfortably or balloon out at the bosom. Also, it is possible to customize the dress as per your body measurements, so always explore that option. A flowy dress looks great only if it fits the shoulders and bosom correctly and does not pinch the waist and hips. Also, the dress should give an illusion of slimness and height. If the dress you picked is really pretty but makes your figure appear blockish, discard it.

Pick flirty florals. Floral prints go with summer the way the Sun complements clear skies! Choose a plain white or pastel shade dress with a large flower stitched on the hem for a dash of summer style. Or pick a cotton dress with a calming floral pattern that you can complement with comfortable walking shoes and a hat. If you’re feeling adventurous, pick a dress with bold, large flowers all over it – but keep your jewellery to a minimum and wear sober shoes in a matching colour.

Wear a fitted jacket. A flowy dress lends itself beautifully to a ‘dual silhouette’ – your dress might be an A-line frock that might look slightly shapeless till you team it with a fitted cotton jacket in a single colour. Your dress is dramatically highlighted with a jacket, or a smartly cinched waist using a thin belt or a dark scarf. Experiment with different jacket styles, too – the plainer your dress, the more daring your jacket can be.

Try different lengths. The best thing about flowy dresses is that they give you the freedom to experiment with different lengths. If you are tall and thin, an ankle-length dress is best; go the other extreme and wear a really short dress with a good fall. If you are pear-shaped, you can try a knee-length dress in chiffon or cotton. Short women should wear knee- or calf-length dresses.
